Saiya Suzuki (Japanese: 鈴木 (すずき) 幸也 (さいや) , Suzuki Saiya) was a first-year at Yukigaoka Junior High. He was a first-year member of the Boys' Volleyball Team when Hinata was still in junior high.

Appearance

He has big, round brown eyes and thick brown hair. He wears a light green volleyball jersey with the number 2 printed on the shirt and carries a light brown bag.

Personality

Suzuki appears to be quite timid and lacks confidence in himself.

Background

Suzuki was one of the three first-years who joined Yukigaoka boys' volleyball club in Hinata's third-year of junior high. He and the other first-years were stated to have played a little volleyball during elementary school.

Plot

After starting middle school, Suzuki joined the volleyball club. With Hinata as his captain, the team eventually joined a volleyball tournament. Having just played for fun, Suzuki is incredibly nervous during the game and his inexperience is apparent. Throughout the match against Kitagawa Daiichi Junior High, he relies on Hinata to guide him and the others but still tries to do his best. Despite their best efforts, Yukigaoka lost the match and were out of the tournament. Before and after the match, Hinata showed his gratitude to Suzuki and the team for granting him the chance to participate in a real game.

After their loss, Suzuki and the others are seen playing with the girls' volleyball team.

• Shōyō Hinata: Hinata was Suzuki's captain during the latter's first-year on the boys' volleyball team. Despite the first-years lacking confidence in themselves and expressing fear of their upcoming matches, Hinata remained optimistic and encouraged them to do their best. Throughout the match, he made sure to cheer up the first-years whenever they made mistakes. Suzuki didn't appear to be affected by Hinata's motivational efforts though.

• Suzuki shared his English voice actor with Yōhei Ashiya of Ubugawa High, Shōta Naguri and Kazutaka Yoshikawa of Shinzen High, and Yoshiaki Nurukawa.

• In Haikyuu's first popularity poll, Suzuki was tied with Sasaya at 50^th with 95 votes. However, he did not rank in the second popularity poll.
