Appearance[]
He has medium-length black hair that is pulled back and a chin curtain-style beard with a short-trimmed goatee. His eyes are rather thick and tubby. It is for this reason that he, like Asahi, is usually thought of as older than he currently is. He has a large build.
Personality[]
Hanayama appears to be a nice and laid-back person. He respects Takeru since he's the captain of the team, and he also praises him for being able to motivate Kawatabi by pointing out cute girls.
Background[]
Not much is known about his background. It's known he has a little sister, which is the reason for his current concern.
Plot[]
Spring High Preliminary Arc[]
Wakunan wins their first match of the Qualifiers in straight sets. Hanayama is seen walking off the court with his team.
When the match against Karasuno begins, Nishinoya sees Hanayama's goatee and tells Asahi not to let the setter outmatch him. Shortly after, Hanayama would be the first one to serve. Shortly after the match begins, Hanayama uses multiple of his hitters as decoys for Kawatabi. Sometime later, Hanayama gets alarmed when he accepts Kawatabi's request to spike the ball each time after being motivated by Nakashima.
Sometime later, Hanayama surprises Kawatabi when he urges the setter to toss to him, but he instead goes for a dump. At this, Shimada notices Wakutani Minami's good performance at keeping a calm demeanor. Shortly after, Hanayama is one of the receivers that fail to save Yamaguchi's let serve. Despite being a setter, a position not reputed for good receives, Hanayama is able to nicely receive an enemy shot.
Unlike his other teammates, Hanayama blames Nakashima for getting blocked on his low set sometime during the third set. When seeing Kawatabi's amazing save, Hanayama yells in support of his teammate. Sometime later, Hanayama admits to admiring Kageyama's courage to utilize his hitters in risky ways that still manage to play out nicely. Following his team's loss, Hanayama breaks into tears. He is last seen thanking Wakutani's supporters.
